5 Major Points of the Fourteen Points: Jan. 1918: Pres. Wilson drew up peace plan Fourteen Points: First four: End to secret treaties, freedom of seas, free trade, reduced nat’l armies & navies Fifth: Adjustment of colonies w/fairness toward colonial peoples Six thru Thirteen: Change borders & create new nations *Fourteenth Point: Proposed “general association of nations” League of Nations

7 I. The Allies Meet and Debate B. The Versailles Treaty 1. France and Britain wanted to punish Germany severely and strip them of all war making power.

8 I. The Allies Meet and Debate B. The Versailles Treaty 2. The Treaty of Versailles was signed at the Paris Peace Conference on 6/28/1919, five years to the day of Franz Ferdinand’s assassination

9 I. The Allies Meet and Debate B. The Versailles Treaty 3. Wilson’s 14 th point, League of Nations, was adopted and this league was to be an international association whose goal was to keep peace among nations

14 II. A Troubled Treaty B. A Peace Built on Quicksand 1. The U.S. rejected the Versailles Treaty mostly because of the League Nations. Americans wanted to stay out of European affairs and the League of Nations would force them to partake in their affairs.
