1 Basic Sentence Patterns

2 Fundamentals 2 parts for every sentence
Complete Subject – who/what the sentence is about Subject (noun or pronoun) All of the modifiers (describers) of the subject (adjs, advs, preps, conj…) Complete predicate – what is being said about the subject Verb All the verbs complements, objects, modifiers

3 Photographs of children in various settings adorn the walls of the art gallery.

4 10 basic patterns Subject – be verb – adverb of time or place
The cat is here. Subject – be verb – predicate adjective The cat is angry. Subject – be verb – predicate noun The cat is a friend.

5 Subject – linking verb – predicate adjective
The cat seems innocent Subject – linking verb – predicate noun The cat became an enemy

6 Subject – intransitive verb Subject – transitive verb – direct object
The cat hissed. Subject – transitive verb – direct object The cat ate the bird.

7 Subject – transitive verb – indirect object – direct object
The cat gave the owner the bird’s body. Subject – transitive verb – direct object – adjective (objective complement) The owner thought the sight disgusting. Subject – transitive verb – direct object – noun (objective complement). The cat judged the owner a lunatic.

8 Patterns 1, 2, and 3 Subject – be verb – adverb of time or place (s-be-adv/tp) Subject – be verb – predicate adjective (s-be-pa) Subject – be verb – predicate noun (s-be-pn)

9 Pattern 1 The adverb that completes the idea of the be verb is diagramed beneath the verb. Basic Pattern: Example: The cat is here.

10 Pattern 2 The predicate adjective is diagramed on the base line, with a diagonal or backslash (points back to subject). Basic Pattern: Example: The cat is angry.

11 Pattern 3 The predicate noun is also diagramed on the base line with a diagonal or backslash (points back to the noun). Basic Pattern Example: The cat is a friend.

12 Practice The stapler is on the desk.

13 Practice My dog is a lover of hikes.

14 Practice The music is extremely beautiful.

15 Practice The birthday party is today.

16 Practice That child is being absurd.

17 Practice Her favorite picture from vacation in California is a snapshot of Mickey Mouse.
