Scientific Revolution Unit 3, SSWH 13 a

How did scientists and their contributions begin to change the European world view?

SSWH 13 a Explain the scientific contributions of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton and how these ideas changed the European world view.

Scientific Revolution Renaissance inspired curiosity – scholars began to question accepted ideas p.435 -436 Scholars decided what was true by the writings of the Greeks or Bible Scientists began to observe the world & questioned its happenings –For example: Geocentric theory – earth is the center of the universe

Nicolaus Copernicus “Heliocentric” Studied the stars for 25 yrs. & reasoned sun was the center of the universe (heliocentric) Fear of persecution by the church, shared info when dying p.434 -435

Johannes Kepler Continued Copernicus’ work, & concluded mathematical laws governed planet motion Kepler proved that planets revolved around the sun p.435

Galileo Galilei Created a telescope, 1609 Published, Starry Messenger, described moons, planets, dark spots on the sun (these ideas shattered Aristotle’s ideas of perfect surfaces) – different from church findings Pope summoned Galileo & put him on trial for crimes against the church (under the threat of torture Galileo said he was wrong) p.434 -441

Scientific Method The findings of these men encouraged the use of the scientific method: observation, question, hypothesis, experimentation, & conclusion p.435-436

Isaac Newton Discovered that all objects are affected by the same force Discovered motion in the heavens is linked to motion on earth, law of universal gravity p.438

Science will encourage: Better instruments, medicine, & chemistry Microscopes, thermometers, barometers Vaccines for small pox, more accurate info on the body Discovery of atoms

How did scientists and their contributions begin to change the European world view?

Test Time??? From today’s SSWH 13 a standard create 2 test questions? Quiz each other in 1 minute. GO!
