1 Language Work #8: Compression!
Kind of like contractions in English! Not bad!

2 Verb Review Type I verbs have a one-syllable root: - glan – to clean - tóg – to take - fan – to wait - ól – to drink Type II verbs have two-syllable roots: - ceannaigh [KYAN-ee] – to buy - brostaigh [BROS-tee] – to hurry - imigh [IM-ee] – to go away - éirigh [EY-ree] – to rise or get up

3 Past Tense Review In both type I and type II verbs, you lenite the verb to do past tense: - glanann tú >> ghlan tú - ceannaíonn tú >> cheannaigh tú To negate both type I and type II verbs, you lenite the verb in present and past tenses: - ní ghlanann tú >> níor ghlan tú - ní cheannaíonn tú >> níor cheannaigh tú

4 Compressing a Verb Take a two-syllable root and lose final vowels Broad: - labhair >> labhraím, labhraíonn tú, etc. - codail >> codlaím, codlaíonn tú, etc. - ceangail >> ceanglaím, ceanglaíonn tú, etc. - freagair >> freagraím, freagraíonn tú, etc. Slender: - inis >> insím, insíonn tú, etc. - imir >> imrím, imríonn tú, etc.

5 Past Tense of Compressed Verbs
It’s the same as any other verb: lenite or use d’ for verbs that begin with vowels or fh: Chodail sé ina charr. D’imir mé le mo chairde. Labhair sé leo (with them). (L does not lenite) D’inis sí an scéal duit (to you). Cheangail mé mo lásaí bróga. D’fhreagair sibh é.

6 Negate the phrase, lenite the verb!
…except when it begins with a vowel. Ní chodlaím anseo. Ní labhraíonn sí leis. Ní imríonn mo chat liom. Ní insíonn a mhac an scéal. Níor cheangail sé a lásaí bróga. Níor cheannaigh mé bia ag an siopa. Níor inis mé aon duine.

7 Questions? Cá gcodlaím anocht? (present tense eclipses)
An gceanglaíonn sí a lásaí? (eclipses) Nach imríonn mo chat liom? (eclipses) An insíonn a mhac an scéal? (eclipses) Ar cheangail sé a lásaí bróga? (past, lenites) Nár cheannaigh tú bia. (past, lenites) Nár inis sí aon duine? (vowel, no lenition) Ar imir sibh leo? (vowel, no lenition)

8 Future Tense, Type II Different endings for broad/slender (=/- fada)
ceannaigh >> ceannóidh mé, tú, etc. imigh >> imeoidh mé, tú, etc. ní cheannóidh mé, tú, etc. ní imeoidh mé, tú, etc. an/nach/cá gceannóidh mé, tú, etc.? an/nach/cá imeoidh mé, tú, etc.?

9 Future Tense, Type II Condensed
Different endings for broad/slender (=/- fada) codail >> codlóidh mé, tú, etc. imir >> imreoidh mé, tú, etc. ní chodlóidh mé, tú, etc. ní imreoidh mé, tú, etc. an/nach/cá gcodlóidh mé, tú, etc.? an/nach/cá imreoidh mé, tú, etc.?

10 What Do You Want to Say? Work in a small group to create a list of five sentences that you, as a group, believe you will need to say in Ireland. Translate them into Irish with your group. Memorize them with correct pronunciation. Be prepared to say them out loud on Monday without benefit of paper in front of you.
