3. Streatham suffers from a very high number of burglaries This year has seen a 22% increase across all of Lambeth. The next four slides will show the scale of burglaries, they depict only our last 12 weeks! 8. Use both locks on your door o Use the mortice locks. This means using your Chubb-type second lock as well as your first Yale-type lock. Use the mortice locks all the time and not just when you are out. o A very common method of entry is for burglars to "slip" Yale-type locks with a piece of plastic. They steal from your hallway whilst you are there! Dont leave valuables in thieves view o We have had over 100 burglaries where bikes left in hallways are stolen. Move them out of sight or at least secure them to a deadbolt in the hallway. o Never leave laptops and new phones near windows or on hall tables. Burglars react to opportunities. Secure your doors and windows o In multi-occupancy buildings i.e. flats, the most important defence is the front door to the building, which must be double locked at all times. It is no good having good locks on your flat door if the front door is unlocked or just on a Yale. Speak to all the other occupants and the landlord to ensure good practice is maintained. o Ensure that your defences are of good quality. That means solid doors, windows, frames and good locks (which are used). Your Safer Neighbourhoods Team will happily check your property for you and give advice – contact details to follow. 9. Mark and register your property o Marking your property to assist its recovery if stolen also scares off burglars. Police often catch burglars with suspected stolen property, but as the serial number was not recorded or the item marked in another way it cannot be proved. Record all your property, including serial numbers and take photos! o Use the Immobilise web site to register all your property. You can record make model and serial number of many types of property on www.immobilise.com. Police now use immobilise to check if property is stolen.www.immobilise.com o Forensic water (Smartwater or SelectaDNA) is something you can mark all your property with, including antiques. It contains a unique DNA code and is visible only under a UV light, which police use to check property. Importantly, you mark up your front door to show burglars you use a forensic water. It scares the burglars off and has achieved 80% reductions wherever it is used. Since using this in April 2011 in two Streatham Streets those lucky streets have not had a single burglary! o You can also mark up all your property with free UV pens. Just write your house number and your postcode on every single item of property Join your local Neighbourhood Watch o Your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is not about frequent meetings that waste your time, but about making your street much safer. 10. Tips on Reducing Robbery Streatham also suffers from high numbers of robberies – street muggings. This has seen an increase of 19% this year in Lambeth. The next 4 slides show the last 12 weeks of robberies in Streatham. Quick Tips: Use main well lit roads where possible and avoid short cuts Walk with confidence Dont display your valuables to thieves Further information about these tips is detailed at the end of this section

11. Dont display your valuables to thieves o This is all about not giving the robbers the opportunity to snatch your property off you. Keep your property, especially phones and music players and laptops/tablets, out of sight. If you really need to make a phone call then ensure you check your surroundings first and pick a safe location. Walk with confidence o Most robberies happen near to train stations and bus stops so please be extra vigilant at these locations. o Walk with confidence – robbers are instinctively attracted to nervous and unsure people. If you are going somewhere new then research your route ahead of time and walk with purpose! It does work. Use main well lit roads where possible and avoid short cuts o Please use main well lit roads where possible and avoid short cuts through estates and alleyways. o If you are unhappy about a possible suspect approaching you then call police on 999 and make a loud noise! 16. Streatham does have high crime of certain types. This does not make it an unsafe area, but care is required. Weve not even touched on motor vehicle crime. 80-90% of the burglaries and robberies are entirely avoidable, which is where you can help. Your Next Steps As a community we can PREVENT the majority of these crimes if our advice is followed. A recent robbery victim was actually walking along Streatham High Rd watching a movie on her new iPhone paying no attention to her surroundings!
