HP and QLogic have been working together for the past 12 years. The relationship started with host connect solutions based on adapters. This included fibre channel, 1 and 10 Gb Ethernet, iSCSI and now Converged Networking and InfiniBand. Over the past several years, HP has also relied on QLogic to provide infrastructure solutions. This includes Virtual Connect Fibre Channel modules, HP’s new H-series fibre channel switch portfolio and HP’s Multi-protocol router solutions for storage networks.

HP Technology Forum was held in June of 2010, and HP introduced a variety of new products based on QLogic technology. Let’s take a look at some of these.
HP increased the flexibility of it’s offerings by introducing the new 12-port model of the H-series SN6000 stackable fibre channel switch.
HP enhance the functionality for customers by updating Simple SAN Connection Manager, or SSCM, to integrate with Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager and provide customers with virtual server environment more visibility and control of their storage network.
HP expanded the capability for customers by introducing Enterprise Fabric Management Suite software to allow customers with H-series SANs more granular control of their storage network. HP also update the capability of the MPX200 multi-protocol router by adding support for XP disk arrays and adding functionality for both on-line and off-line data migration.
And from a value perspective, HP set a new bar for the industry with the introduction of the P2000 G3 SMB SAN Starter Kit. This new single sku offering provides customers with a complete SAN solution at 30% off the standard pricing of the individual components. HP has made scalable SAN more affordable now than ever!

Simple SAN Connection Manager
The new 12-port model of the SN6000 has 8 device ports activated and as with all SN6000 switches, has 4 dedicated stacking, or inter switch link, ports for connecting switches together. The device ports are 8Gbps fibre channel and are backward compatible with 2 and 4 Gb fibre channel. The stacking ports are 10Gbps fibre channel and can be upgraded to 20Gbps with a software license if higher performance is required. The 12-port SN6000 comes in a single supply configuration and additional device ports can be activated in 4-port increments via a software license.
This now rounds out the H-series portfolio so customers can scale from 8 to more than 500 ports in a single fabric. With the 8/20q non-stackable offering on the low end for smaller SANs and cost-sensitive customers, and the SN6000 family that is available is 8 or 20 port base models, HP can deliver a scalable SAN solution for the SMB customer to the enterprise customer.
All H-series switches come with Simple SAN Connection Manager software included. This feature rich software provides customers with the ability to converge the management of their entire SAN from end to end. This single application can manage each element in the SAN: the HBAs, switches and storage. With storage provisioning for the HP MSA or EVA array families, SSCM provides a single pane of glass for customers to manage their entire storage network.
The SN6000 products in the H-series family include the stacking architecture to interconnect switches as storage network needs grow. This provides completely non-disruptive scalability from 8 ports to 120 ports in a single stack of 6 SN6000 switches. For customers who need even more scalability, 5 stacks can be connected together to create a fabric of more than 500 available device ports. The stacking architecture is much more efficient and economical than using device ports for inter switch connections and provides customers with seamless scalability.
Transparent Router is a feature exclusive to HP , that uses NPIV technology to allow H-series SANs to seamlessly connect to B or C-series SANs.
I/O StreamGuard is a feature that is ideal for applications like video editing and data backup where sequential data flow must not get interrupted.
Finally, a key feature to the H-series portfolio is Adaptive Trunking. This allows data flow between switches to be optimized without the need for expensive ISL Trunking Licenses. This saves HP customers thousands of dollars per switch compares to competitor offerings that require these trunking licenses for optimal performance.
