Glassware Identification

Presentation will be on my website as well for review.
You will write the name and description of each item and a quick drawing if needed. Presentation will be on my website as well for review. Glassware ID quiz next class as well as lab safety quiz. ----- Meeting Notes (9/2/11 11:43) -----

Beaker General purpose glassware
Used to mix solutions, transport chemicals Heat chemicals at relatively low temperatures Not used for measuring volumes

Erlenmeyer Flask Also general purpose glassware
Functions same as beaker The sloped sides make it good at mixing/swirling liquids

Test tube General purpose, mixing chemicals
Can easily examine contents

Test tube rack Supports test tubes
Warning: hot test tubes will melt it.

Graduated Cylinder Accurately measures liquid volumes 50mL and 10mL

Watch glass Use to slowly and gently evaporate liquids
Can be used as a lid for beakers

Rubber Stopper Used as a “lid” for flasks and test tubes

Scoopula Transfer solids, scoop chemicals

Evaporating dish Heat or evaporate liquids or solids

Glass Stirring rod Duh!

Crucible Heat solids to very high temperatures Fragile

Clay Triangle Supports crucible when being heated

Pipet Transfer small, amounts of liquids

Crucible Tong Designed to pick-up a crucible

Beaker Tong Designed to pick up a beaker

Test tube clamp Duh!

Utility Clamp Used to support a test tube specifically, or any glassware

Ring Stand Used to support various clamps

Iron Ring Supports clay triangle and wire mesh

Electronic Balance Accurately measures mass to .001 g

Hot Plate Used to heat substances at low temperatures

Wire Mesh Used to support glassware on the ringstand Disperses heat

Bunsen burner High temperature heat source

Water Bottle (H2O) Pure water (H2O), used only as directed or for making solutions. Not used for cleaning or a squirt gun.

Cleaning Brushes Flask brush Beaker brush

Cleaning brushes Test tube brush Graduated cylinder brush

Well plate Used to observe small scale chemical reactions

Buret Used to deliver very precise amounts of liquids in a titration

Mortar and pestel Grinding solids

Temperature probe Accurately measures temperatures in celsius
