PG 154 Exiled Judeans- spent 70 years away from Judah- became known as “Jews” With no temple- they created synagogues and worshipped on the Sabbath Persians defeated the Chaldeans- took Babylon and let the Jews return to Judah Return to Judah

3 PG 155 What is the Hebrew Bible
Rebuilt Jerusalem- constructed a new temple called The Second Temple Persians did not let them have their own government Scribes and religious leaders guided the society 5 books, written on scrolls by Ezra became the Torah- later is became part of the Hebrew Bible Hebrew Bible- made up of- the Torah, the prophets, and the writing- 24 books total. Gives the laws/rules of the Israelites, also gives Jewish history and culture. Genesis- first book gives view of human beings- tells how Earth was creates and believed historical events Explains various world languages What is the Hebrew Bible

4 PG 156 People could not communicate- Genesis says God scattered the people across the Earth Later parts of the Hebrew Bible described their hopes for the future Book of Daniel says Jews believed tat evil and suffering would replace goodness Daniel would not worship the gods of Babylon- he was thrown into the lions den- but God protected him

5 PG 157 Jewish Daily Life The Jewish Family
Torah provided teachings about daily life including what to eat, what to wear, who to help, and how to be loyal to God Family was important- Torah identified specific roles for mothers and fathers Families stressed education Reading the Torah was also central to Jewish life. Women educated daughters in important Jewish traditions and the women of ancient Israel (like Ruth) Jewish Daily Life The Jewish Family

6 PG 158 Laws to Jews- what they could or couldn’t eat- example- no pork Kosher food is prepared according to Jewish dietary laws. Some special foods have religious significance- the Seder at Passover- celebrates the Exodus Dietary Laws
