Parts of The Verb phrase
Headword- the verb Types of verbs (subclasses) Transitive-can be transformed into passive voice; needs a direct object to be complete (a noun phrase must follow) The cat chased the mouse. Intransitive verb- needs no complement to be complete The audience applauded.

NP + VP = s Noun Phrase + Verb Phrase = Sentence OR Subject + Predicate = Sentence PRACTICE: Divide the sentences into subject and predicate. Then identify the headwords of the subject noun phrases: Our country commissioners passed a new ordinance. The mayor’s husband spoke against the ordinance. The mayor was upset with her husband. The merchants in town are unhappy. This new law prohibits billboards on major roadways. *Key to finding the subject: try replacing it with a personal pronoun (I, you, he, she, it we, they)
