2 Vocabulary - Check vocabulary.com
I have placed practice of the 20 words on there. If you complete the practice by Friday, I will give you extra credit.

3 Fahrenheit 451 Written by: Ray Bradbury
Science Fiction novel about what censorship can do to a society. Montag is the main character that makes significant changes throughout the story – Dynamic character Captain Beatty is the antagonist in the story Clarisse is a minor character that causes Montag to question himself.

4 Night A memoir about the Holocaust with a major theme of inhumanity.
The story starts out with Moshe the Beadle trying to warn the village about the Nazi threat. The people don’t believe him because they can’t imagine something that awful is actually true. When the Jews enter the concentration camp, they are forced to surrender all their belongings, shave their heads, and get tattoos with an identification number. The selection processes means that the people were chosen to live or die based on their ability to work. When Elie is on the death march the only thing that stops him from giving up and dying is the thought of his father. Elie is a dynamic character. He changes both physically and mentally.

5 “The Most Dangerous Game”
Short story about survival of the fittest. This story builds suspense because the reader is uncertain how the “hunt” will end. Rainsford changes his theory about hunting when he becomes the hunted – example of a dynamic character. The island name “Ship-trap Island” is an example of foreshadowing. General Zaroff explains that he started hunting humans because he got bored hunting animals and like the idea that humans have the ability to think and reason. The story starts with Rainsford falling off the Yacht and needing to swim to the island and ends with Rainsford winning the hunt and sleeps in Zaroff’s bed.

6 “The Lottery” A short story by Shirley Jackson about tradition. The power of tradition and that people are not willing to change because of the mindset of “that’s how its always been”. The setting and the event are extremely opposite. It starts with a beautiful day and ends with a dark tragic event. “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon” The people believe that because they have the lottery they have plentiful crops. An example of duality is when the women are very nice to each other, but then they stone Tessie to death at the end of the story. The boys gathering the stones at the beginning of the story is an example of Foreshadowing
