Alliances Balance of Power- every nation tried to increase its strength by securing as many allies as possible. Triple Alliance Germany Austria-Hungary Italy Triple Entente Great Britain France Russia When one or the other was threatened- the allies would come to their aid. Many secret alliances created between nations– leads to distrust. Triple Alliance and the ones that belong to the Triple Entente. (Note: students often confuse the two and here is a way for students to remember which nations belongs to which: inform students that the word “entente” is French for a diplomatic “understanding.” Therefore, if they will remember that entente is a French word, they can remember which one had France for a member.)

A member of the Serbian terrorist group “Black Hand” shot the Archduke of Austria Francis Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. Ferdinand was the heir to the Austrian throne It was also their anniversary.

War is on the Horizon! European nations attempt to arbitrate the dispute. July 28, Austria Hungary declares war on Serbia. Alliance with Germany brings them into the war. Russian belief that they are the protectors of all Slavic speaking nations brings them to the aid of Serbia.

Couldn’t determine his age at the trial. Capital Punishment was forbidden for anyone under 20 at the time of the crime. So therefore he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the maximum, but died in 1918 from Tuberculosis. Gavrilo’s Trial
