Need for RESOURCES and MARKETS Gaining new territory gives the U.S. access to natural resources not available in current territory (ex: Sugar in Hawaii), and new people to sell goods to Strategic Reasons New places to build military bases and set as outposts closer to South America, and easier/better access to Asia (China) Nationalism Belief and pride in American culture and the desire to spread those ideals to others (democracy) Attitudes Towards Other Peoples Feelings of superiority over other races made Americans believe it was “necessary” to civilize the uncivilized

First used in warfare by the Germans, and very few weapons exist that can do anything to stop them Machine Guns Change the battle-field making it much easier to kill men in mass quantity without accurate aim Airplanes Use in warfare for the first time; air-lift supplies and battle in air Trench Warfare and Stalemate (new weapons,old tactics) Trenches served as protection from new long range weapons on the Western Front but made it difficult to progress forward and gain land…so STALEMATE became the norm…

B: blame placed on Germany: known as ‘War Guilt’ R: reparations required for damage – $33 Billion A: army and navy minimized, no offensive forces T: territory lost, colonies taken by winners League of Nations Part of the 14 Pts, plan for a global organization intended to prevent future wars Congress would not accept it, so U.S. did not join Wilson’s Fourteen Points Wilson’s plan for post-war Europe, included self-determination of many nations, helping Germany rebuild and establish a new working government. Also established the League of Nations.
