4 A time clause tells you when an action happened
A time clause tells you when an action happened. They start with the following words: before after as soon as Subject + Verb when while

5 before Alan moved to California after I moved to the United States as soon as it stopped raining while Bob was driving when she got home

6 Time Clauses are connected to Main Clauses.
As soon as it stopped raining, we went to the movies. We went to the movies as soon as it stopped raining. We ate when everyone was home.

Two clauses in the Simple Past Tense are used to talk about an action that happened before another. Mike shaved before he took a shower. main clause time clause Note: First Mike shaved. Then he took a shower. After Jane retired, she sold her house and moved. time clause main clause Note: First Jane retired. Then she sold her house and traveled.

15 When to use the Past Progressive?

16 To talk about an action that was or wasn’t in progress at a specific time in the past. Tony was taking a nap at 2: They weren’t copying during the test.

17 Past Progressive + Simple Past
They are use to talk about an action that was interrupted by another action. Bob was cooking when he cut his finger. interrupted action interrupting action When Alan’s wife woke him up, he was sleeping on the sofa.

18 Past Progressive + Past Progressive
They are used to talk about actions in progress in the past. The past progressive is used in the time clause and main clause. Rosie was singing while she was taking a shower. main clause time clause When John was eating, he was watching TV.

19 Time Markers Simple Past Tense and Past Progressive
last night (week, month, year, semester) ago (a week ago, a couple of days ago) yesterday (morning, afternoon, evening) Tom was living in Walnut a year ago. Did you study at Mt. SAC last semester?

20 There are two kinds of clauses.
Independent: It is a complete idea. It’s cold. Jamie doesn't work. Dogs bark. Main clause are independent clauses Dependent: It is not a complete idea. When Jimmy was 10 If I can work over-time When Natalie was tired Dependent clauses need to be connected to a main clause.
