3 Controlled Substances - Hallucinogens
Affect perception, self-awareness, and emotions. May be natural (Marijuana) or chemically manufactured (LSD). Effects vary from person to person

5 Narcotics Act to reduce pain by suppressing CNS ability to relay pain signals to brain. Very Addictive

Opium – difficulty breathing, confusion, coma, weakness Heroin,Codeine, Morphine – difficulty breathing, coma, constipation, vomiting, death Methadone – difficulty breathing, coma, muscle twitches Oxycodone – difficulty breathing, seizures, dizziness, coma, small pupils

8 Stimulants Increase feelings of energy and alertness while suppressing appetite. Depression as effects wear off.

Side effects: acne, inc. body hair, baldness, sterility in males, heart attacks, cancer

13 Depressants Barbituates – relieve anxiety and produce sleep
Reduce body functions by increase of neurotransmitter GABA, causing drowsiness.

14 Depressants Sleeping pills, rufilin, date rape drugs, etc.
Side effects – slurred speech, loss of coordination OD may cause slow heart rate, coma, and death.
