2 Warm-up Go to your City-State Worksheet on page LA 10. “Find the summary” box. Write a summary describing the raise and fall of the Mayas. (Use your notes and you city-state papers as a reference.)

King Pacal was the most powerful and famous ruler of Palenque. 2b. Why did Maya cities fight each other? Maya cities fought each other to gain power (sometimes economic) and land. 3a. What happened to Maya civilization in the 900s? The Maya Classic Age ended in the 900s when the Maya stopped building temples and other large structures, left the cities, and went to live in the countryside. 3b. In what way did growth of cities, warfare, and drought possibly affect Maya civilization? These factors likely made it too hard to produce enough food to support large populations.
