What are the responsibilities of members of Congress? What are some of the president’s job descriptions? What is the purpose of the Judicial Branch? How does the Supreme Court work? How does the U.S. federal govt. attempt to prevent the abuse of power?

3 Section 1: Federalism: One Nation and Fifty States
Under Federalism Some powers are reserved for the states Ex: setting up local govt. and public schools Some powers are shared by the states and the federal government Ex: collecting taxes Some powers are reserved for the federal government Ex: Declaring War

4 Section 2: NC’s Legislature
NC’s constitution establishes a 2-house legislature which makes laws for the state The General Assembly House of Representatives: 120 Seats Senate: 50 Seats

5 How does an idea become a law in NC?
1. Lawmakers write an idea into a bill and introduce it. 2. A Committee reviews the bill. 3. The House and Senate debate and then vote on the bill. 4. The Governor signs it into law or vetoes the bill. (If vetoed, a 3/5 vote from both houses can override.)

District Courts Misdemeanor, civil, juvenile and domestic cases Superior Courts Major Criminal and Civil Cases over $10,000 Court of Appeals Appeals from the District and Superior Courts NC Supreme Court Highest Court. Final interpreter of the NC constitution.
