12 How IB differs from other curricula
Teaching is inquiry based Learning choices are student directed Courses are fast paced ‘Whole-student’ oriented Assessments are authentic; they require imagination and analysis Grading is ‘internal’ and ‘external’ and ‘moderated’ Assessments are not a single snapshot

13 Students at International Baccalaureate® (IB) World Schools are given a unique education.
students will: be encouraged to think independently and drive their own learning. take part in programmes of education that prepare them for universities around the world. become more culturally aware through the development of a second language. be able to engage with people in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world. Become more inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.

14 How is the IB Learner Profile expressed?
International nature of the IB Course Curriculum and Content Requirements in Course Assessments

15 CREATIVITY, ACTION & SERVICE (CAS)
CAS Learning Outcomes • undertaken new challenges increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth • planned and initiated activities • worked collaboratively with others • shown perseverance and commitment in their activities • engaged with issues of global importance • considered ethical implications of actions • developed new skills

Ib incorporates quality practice from research and our global community of schools. Ib encourages students of all ages to consider both local and global contexts. Ib develops multilingual students. Work hard now – it opens doors for you later… Figure out more of who you really are… College benefits… admissions, advanced standing, better performance

20 BENEFITS OF IB CLASSES Skills and content
Study habits and time management skills Challenging, stimulating, and motivating curriculum Internationally recognized College entrance, college performance, and enhanced scholarship opportunities

21 CHALLENGES OF IB CLASSES
Students need to be prepared for the rigor of IB Student and teacher vs. IB NOT student vs. teacher Time management Maintaining a balanced life

22 How can you help your student?
Plan a course sequence early. See later slides and the Planning Packet on the SHS IB website. Get them planning tools and model how you manage your time. Be sure they maintain balance in their life: social, school, free time. Nutrition and exercise are very important. Be sensitive to their challenges – hear them. Grow their independence and self-sufficiency- implement a ‘choices and consequences’ decision-making model. Maintain open communication with them AND their teachers.

23 the ib Career Related program:
Engages students in career focused classes. Students take examinations in two or more IB Diploma courses. Students create a language portfolio a community service project a reflective project exploring a particular career field.

24 What are the IBCP Career Tracks?
Business Management Computer Science Criminal Justice Marketing and Business Management Sports Medicine Teaching Television Production Web Design Other Options Available

A program that encourages students to flourish emotionally, ethically, intellectually and physically. A program that encourages a positive attitude toward learning.

26 Planning your 2-3 year Schedule

29 Planning for Math IB Math curriculum is changing in 2019-2020
ideally Students should be in algebra 2 in grade 9 or 10. Students beyond algebra 2 in 9th grade may be forced to repeat material and/or have a gap between finishing IB coursework and taking the iB exam.

30 Current Math Pathways Current through May 2020

31 FUTURE MATH PATHWAYS Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations
A focus on developing mathematical understanding of our world and deploying technology and mathematics in tandem. For students interested in practical solutions to real world problems. TBD 2019: SL and/or HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches A focus on mathematical arguments and mathematical thinking. For students continuing studies in subjects with heavy mathematical content – engineering, physical sciences, economics, etc… SL and/or HL FUTURE MATH PATHWAYS First exams 2021 (current 9th graders)

32 Planning for Music Taking music for 1 year in IB Diploma is not a problem. Taking music for both years in IB Diploma requires the students to take 2 IB exams during 11th grade – typically Language B and either math or science. This means interested students should plan to: Start Language B in grade 8 and test Standard level in grade 11, and Finish SL Math by grade 11, or Take only 1 year of IB science in grade 11

33 Planning for World Language
an IB Diploma MUST INCLUDE coursework in a world language at SHS. The World Language proficiency test Does not exempt students. language should be ‘new’ to the student. IB World Language (language B) is designed as a language acquisition course. IBO states, “…language b should be a challenging educational experience for the student, offering not only the opportunity to learn an additional language but also the means of learning, appreciating and effectively interacting in a culture different from the student’s own.”

34 Planning for College Admissions
Be aware of admissions requirements for colleges/programs of interest Plan to fulfill 1.0 credit in Fine Arts in grades 9 or 10 unless you plan to include Film, Music, Theatre or Visual Arts in your IB Diploma Most colleges require some Fine Art for Admissions 0.5 for most public 4 year colleges 1.0 for most 4 year private colleges 1.0 in the same subject for All University of California schools (UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCSF, etc…)

41 Keys to Success TIME MANAGEMENT
It is true that strong, consistent effort is needed to succeed in IB. This does NOT mean that classes are impossible, or that they are only for academic superstars! ORGANIZATION Pay attention to the calendar! Be aware of deadlines and pace yourself to meet them. Use your planner, phone, or other organizational tool to keep track of all assignments. KNOW YOUR TARGET Study consistently throughout the entire course! Know the rubric, and practice using it – ask your teacher what the “IB language” means on assessment questions and rubrics.

46 The Process: Considering the Diploma
Download a DIPLOMA PLANNING PACKET from the “IB Diploma > Planning for IB> Planning Documents” page on the Skyline HS website. Complete your Diploma plan. Register for 9th grade classes in March using the school Course Request Process (CRP) March 5-16. 10th graders planning on the IB Diploma should request a meeting with the IB Diploma Coordinator (Mr. Wilder) to be completed January/February of the year prior to starting coursework.

47 Possible Schedule Conflicts
We CANNOT GUARANTEE that every IB Diploma schedule will work. Generally, ‘singleton classes’ such as Vocal Jazz, Evergreen, Theatre, etc… may present scheduling complications. Students may have to choose between a subject they love and the IB Diploma. IB students (Course, Certificate, and Diploma) are not guaranteed their 1st choice of electives. LIST ALL ALTERNATE COURSES WHEN REGISTERING.
