2 Goals for this meeting: Parents will understand what the elements are of the IB program and all of the IB options for 11 th and 12 th grade. Parents will understand the ‘costs’ and ‘values’ associated with being a part of the CHS IB program. Parents will be able to make an informed decision along with their son or daughter about signing up to participate in the CHS IB- Diploma Program, IB Career-Related Program or IB courses.

3 What is IB? The International Baccalaureate® (IB) aims to do more than other curricula by developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.

8 To earn the IB Diploma students must Complete assessments in each IB subgroup (6 areas)  2 or 3 Standard Level and 3 or 4 Higher Level Complete Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course (2 sem.) and paper Complete an Extended Essay with feedback from an advisor Fulfill requirements of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)  50 hours of CREATIVITY  50 hours of ACTION  50 hours of SERVICE Requirements of the IB Diploma Program at CHS:

16 Core elements for DIPLOMA CASExtended Essay Students use online system to log and reflect on: 50 hours CREATIVITY 50 hours ACTION 50 hours SERVICE One key component is a CAS project that spans a period of 8-15 months and includes elements of at least 2 of the CAS parts. Through TOK class and IB English, students choose a topic to research. They are paired with a faculty advisor to guide them along the way. The 4000 word essay is due in January of 12 th grade.

18 IB Diploma Fees $15 ManageBac 11 th Grade $15 ManageBac 12 th Grade $175 One-time IB Registration Fee (paid first year you test) $120 per test (x6) $925 total for IB Diploma TAX CREDIT donations CAN be used to pay all IB fees. Students on Free/Reduced lunch are asked to pay ManageBac fees + $20 Reg fee + $20 per test = $175 for IB Diploma Financial Assistance is available. We do not want financial need to keep anyone from pursuing the IB Diploma.

19 Value of the IB Diploma Students can earn college credit for HL exams Students are very well prepared for college courses By completing a well-rounded academic curriculum, the students are ready to take on the challenges of any career path Students stand out in admission/scholarship process for taking on full program Through CAS, the students further see the value of being an active part of the community – both local and global

20 Core elements for CAREER PROGRAM Service and LanguageReflective Project Students use online system to log and reflect on: 50 hours SERVICE Language Learning Portfolio One key component is to complete service hours that are related to the field of study. Through ATL class and CTE course, choose a topic to research. The students create a Reflective Project based on an ethical dilemma.

21 IB Career- Related Program Curriculu m Framewor k Visual Arts Film Students choose at least 2 IB courses to complete Students take two semesters of “Approaches to Learning” class

22 Value of the IB Career-Related Program Certificate Develop a broad range of career-related competencies and to deepen students’ understanding in general areas of knowledge Prepare for effective participation in an ever-changing world of work Foster the attributes of the IB learner profile allowing them to become true lifelong learners willing to consider new perspectives Engage in learning that makes a positive difference to future lives Become self-confident people ready for life in the 21st century.

24 IB Course Students interested in participating in part of the IB program but not completing all of the requirements for the full diploma can: Take at least one IB course Take the IB assessment at the end of that course *Colleges will only grant credit for HL exams

26 How to sign up Current sophomores wanting to participate in the IB program during Junior and Senior year need to complete to online commitment form at: http://goo.gl/TJP9pz Mrs. Bender will meet one-on-one with all students signing up for the DIPLOMA and the CAREER-RELATED PROGRAM to create a two-year academic plan.
