Unit 241: Principles of team leading The aim of this session is to: To develop learner/s understanding of team motivation Learners will be able to: 1. Explain the meaning of the term ‘motivation’ 2. Explain factors that affect the level of motivation of team members 3. Describe the techniques that can be used to motivate team members 4. What is ‘motivation’? Discuss this in your group and write a definition. Tutor to discuss this with learner/s and arrange a session for the learner/s to write their own definition.

3 What is ‘motivation’? NOUN: A reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way: eg ‘escape can be a strong motivation for travel’ synonyms: motive · motivating force · incentive · stimulus · stimulation Tutor to collect learner/s’ definitions and reveal this definition.

5 What affects the level of motivation of team members
In session 1 we covered two motivational theories: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory. Revisit Worksheets 3 and 4. Tutor to get learners to revisit activities and Worksheets 3 and 4 from session 1. Tutor to discuss Maslow in more depth.

Distribute Worksheet 11 and discuss with learners their responses. There is a tutor answer sheet available for you to use for guidance – you can expand and discuss further.

Appreciation Clear vision Tutor to discuss how thanking and rewarding can motivate teams to work hard and remain loyal. Also the importance of clear communication of the company vision is informative and builds on teamwork.

11 Positive affects of motivation on organisations
What are the positive effects of motivation on organisations? Tutor to ask learner/s in groups or one to one.

12 How motivated staff affect organisations
Motivated staff tend to perform better in the workplace and show more commitment their job and this has a positive impact on the team, organisational performance and staff retention. Other positives include: Improved relationships with customers and suppliers, leading to increased business and better terms. Reduced sickness/absence – improving staffing costs and productivity.
