1 Terrestrial Ecosystems

2 Forests Many trees Temperatures vary Plenty of rainfall

3 Deciduous Forest Has 4 seasons Trees that lose their leaves
Plants – trees, ferns, mosses, shrubs, grasses Animals – bears, foxes, rabbits, deer, snakes, cardinals, owls

4 Coniferous Forest Colder temperatures
Trees that produce seeds in cones and have leaves shaped like needles. Do not lose leaves in fall Animals – elk, moose, beavers, wolves, finches, and jays

5 Tropical Rainforests Very warm, very rainy, humid
Rich in plant and animal life Animals – monkeys, panthers, snakes and other reptiles, spiders, parrots, and toucans.

6 Temperate Rainforests
Cooler temperatures, very rainy, humid Largest along the Pacific Coast of the U.S.

7 Grasslands Fertile soil covered by tall grasses and some woody shrubs, hardly any trees Warm Some rainfall Gently rolling hills Animals – prairie dogs, grasshoppers, birds, bison

8 Grasslands In North America the grasslands are called Prairies

9 American Grasslands: North American Grasslands
Watch the following videos on Discovery Ed: American Grasslands: North American Grasslands Coniferous Forest: Deciduous Forest: Rain Forests:

10 Foldable #1 Deciduous Forest Coniferous Forest Tropical Rainforest
List information about all 3 different kinds of forests, making sure to compare them.  Example: Types of Trees/Plants found in each, amount of rainfall, animals. Deciduous Forest Coniferous Forest Tropical Rainforest Use your notes and your Social Studies textbook (pgs 64-73) to fill out the chart.

11 Grasslands and Forests
Foldable #2 List similarities and differences between grasslands (prairie NOT savannah) and forests. Grasslands and Forests Similarities Differences Use your notes and your Social Studies textbook (pgs 64-73) to fill out the chart

12 Terrestrial Ecosystems
