17 Student Expectations

18 Student Expectations In all matters related to the dual credit course, students are held to the standards, expectations and regulations of HCC. Academic standards Attendance requirements Grading procedures and discipline procedures (including appeals) are under the jurisdiction of HCC.

19 Attendance Requirements
HCC does not differentiate between unexcused and excused absences. KISD field trips count as absences. Student can be dropped for excessive absences (more than 6). Student responsibility for make up work. Classes meet 3 days/week if taught by HCC faculty; 5 days/week if taught by a KISD teacher serving as adjunct HCC faculty.

20 Grading Policies Progress reports and report card grades are NOT issued during the course of the semester. Instructors will ONLY communicate with the student about his/her course grades. Dual credit courses are exempt from UIL eligibility rules. Dual credit courses do not receive a weighted grade point for determining high school GPA. KISD final exam exemptions are not available for HCC dual credit courses.

Course Average HCC Grade KISD Conversion 90-100 A 95 80-89 B 85 70-79 C 77 60-69 D 72 0-59 F 65

22 Discipline Policies KISD infractions may impact dual credit attendance. Students may be administratively withdrawn for inappropriate behavior and attendance. Economics, history, government, English and math are required courses for high school graduation.

23 Scholastic Dishonesty
Includes but is not limited to cheating on a test, plagiarism and collusion on an assignment. Possible consequences may include: Receiving a grade of “0” or “F” on the assignment. Failure in the course and/or recommendation for probation or dismissal from HCC. 30 day appeal window Katy ISD will honor the decision of the HCC appeals committee.

24 Other Differences Withdrawing from a HCC dual credit course requires completion of a withdrawal form for HCC separately from the high school. The instructional calendar may be adjusted as needed to accommodate differences in KISD and HCC academic calendars. Additional classes and/or assignments may be required.

42 WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT DUAL CREDIT…
“TAKE DUAL CREDIT BECAUSE YOU DON’T HAVE TO TAKE AN EXAM AT THE END” “Because of dual credit, I will have only 4 freshmen classes to take” “When choosing dual credit, make sure you sign up for the classes you actually need in college” “it’s a little more laid back than AP, but it’s not so easy that you can blow off the class” “If you need to improve your essays, take this class. Make sure you don’t procrastinate your work in the class.” “you will be taking a lot of notes, you have more responsibility to study on your own, just like a normal college class. You’re given a lot less busy work.”

43 What the dual credit instructor says…
My best advice is to really think about the type of learner the student is.  If they are fairly independent learners who are willing to do outside reading and study, and they are prepared to write a lot, they will probably be successful in my dual credit class.  They do need to be aware that there are fewer assignments in a dual credit class, and that means that there are fewer grades.  Students can’t blow off a test or not turn in an assignment ( like they might in a high school class) and still expect to make an A (or even a B in many cases).   My other piece advice is to make sure the students are willing to communicate with the teachers if they are struggling.  We are generally willing to work with them but they need to advocate for themselves.  This will be important once they get to a 4-year college or university as well.  Ms. Dennison – us history teacher - oths

44 What the dual credit instructor says…
In this HCC Dual Credit English, we read and we write. We discuss important topics. We ask each other difficult questions and we challenge our own assumptions. No one will tell you this course is easy. Students who manage to earn an A will say it was the result of countless hours of hard work. Sign up for this class because you want to engage seriously with serious matters. Mr. Lipton – English - oths
