Accessibility Outreach
A new law, goals, and a plan for training.
2
Why is Accessibility Important?
On January 18, 2018, an expansion of Section 508 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 went into effect. The requirements include that: All federally funded “electronic and information technology must be accessible to people with disabilities.”
3
How does this impact Delta?
Materials utilized in D2L and other online sources must be made accessible. Making our materials accessible benefits all users of the system, whether or not they have a disability.
4
Accessibility is… the responsibility of all who create or publish digital content. provided for all students, with no expectation of an explanation of need. expected for disabilities that are easily anticipated. Source: Educause Review [
5
What happens if Delta does not comply with the law?
If colleges and universities do not comply with this ruling, they run the risk of: lawsuits by persons with disabilities lawsuits by disability advocacy groups possible suspension of federal aid
6
What is the timeline for transitioning materials into accessible formats ?
Our goal is to show progression toward full compliance with the law. Online courses materials should be compliant by the start of Fall 2018. Blended and F2F electronic materials should be compliant by the end of Fall 2018.
7
Will I have to replace all of my materials?
No. Almost all types of materials can be made accessible by making minor changes. There are techniques in place to apply accessibility to images, video, documents, presentations, spreadsheets, equations, web pages and PDFs. In a few cases, some documents may need to be recreated, or the information may need to be presented in an additional format.
