Period of time ( ) when the British were lenient with the colonies Why? British leave colonies alone because they are making them $$ (profits) Results? Leads to the development of independent colonial trade practices as well as a self sufficient government. Colonies begin to trade on their own and govern themselves.

4 The Policy of Salutary Neglect
“… I know that the Colonies in general owe little or nothing to any care of ours, and that they are not squeezed into this happy form by the constraints of watchful and suspicious government, but that, through a wise and salutary neglect, a generous nature has been suffered to take her own way to perfection; when I reflect upon these effects, when I see how profitable they have been to us…” In Edmund Burke's 1775 "Speech on Conciliation with the Colonies," the term "salutary neglect" was first used.

10 Classwork: Fill out the graphic organizer about the similarities and differences between the 13 British colonies Homework: Write at least one paragraph explaining how the colonial experience under Great Britain led to a war for independence. This will be collected for homework.
