Economy of the Middle Colonies
Dillon Frank Economy of the Middle Colonies The middle colonies were fertile and they exported agricultural products and natural resources. They were called the breadbasket colonies because they grew so many crops, especially wheat and corn. They built flour mills where wheat was ground into flour and shipped to England. Land was acquired more easily than in the other colonies. Farms were large, often 50 to 150 acres. The middle colonies were able to manufacture iron ore products such as plows, tools, kettles, nails and large blocks of iron which they exported to England.

Dillon Frank Economy of the Middle Colonies Con. The fur trade was very popular in the Middle colonies and was another one of their main exports. Colonists also had the ability to trade for furs and other items from the western Indian tribes and neighboring trappers up north. The Middle colonies sent many of their exports to Philadelphia or Boston, where they would exchange with the New England colonists or set sail for Britain. Labor was in short supply in the middle colonies and they were always looking for cheap and abundant labor. They used free labor, indentured servants and slaves in the middle colonies.

How the Middle Colonies made money
Audrey Lee How the Middle Colonies made money Farmers found more favorable conditions in the Middle Colonies than in New England. Farmers in the eastern counties of the Middle Colonies cleared their fields. The Farmers raised wheat, barley, and rye. These were cash crops, or crops that were sold for money at a market. The Middle Colonies exported a lot of grain, and soon became known as the Bread Basket colony. The Middle Colonies made a large amount of money this way.

Dillon Frank Systems of Labor In the Middle Colonies labor was always in short supply. They exported large amounts of agricultural products and natural resources. They grew so many crops, especially wheat. They also manufactured iron ore products. To do all this they had to try to meet these demands with cheap labor. 1) free labor - they were not slaves, and not indentured servants got to do anything they wanted

Dillon Frank Systems of Labor 2) Indentured servants-Mostly young white teenagers whose parents arranged for them to work for families in the colonies until age 21 in exchange for their ocean passage Indenture- was a legal written contract binding one party into the service of another for a specified term They were contracted to work for a fixed period of time (usually 5-7 years) in exchange for transportation to the colonies. They worked and had no wages but were given basic necessities and could look forward to eventually being released. A great majority of them became farmers or farm wives.
