South Africa was a colony of the British Empire. British entered South Africa in 1795 Received Limited Self-Rule in 1910. Became British Remove last vestiges of colonial rule in 1931. South Africa passes Union Act in 1934, which officially declares independence.

A system of racial segregation Why would did South Africa implement this system? Maintain Control Economics Political Afrikaner-Dutch South African nationalism National Party Took control after independence in 1948 Implemented Apartheid Many Afrikaeners saw this opportunity

Opposition was Growing Bantu Authorities Act (1951) Established Homelands Separate tribal states were set up Political Rights restricted to region Blacks COULD NOT live in White areas (or interact with each other) (1959) - the majority black population would be forced to live here.

Bantu Self Government Act (1959) Deceptively named. None of the homelands allowed full democratic participation Now represented through homelands. SA Parliament set up puppet regimes for each homeland. Bantu Self Government Act (1959) Deceptively named. None of the homelands allowed full democratic participation Government eliminated the three white representatives who had been appointed to speak for Africans in Parliament. Now represented through homelands South Africa Parliament set up puppet regimes for each homeland. Wanted Africans to view political destiny as residing in the homelands structure, not in south Africa as a whole.
