Unit Objective: 2.01 Hardware & IPOS

2 What Is A Computer? An electronic device that:
Receives data Processes data Stores data, and Produces a result (output). Uses hardware and software Variety of types and sizes

3 Types of Personal Computers
Desktop computer: designed to be used on a desktop Laptop computer: designed to be small enough and light enough to be used on your lap

4 Types of Personal Computers
Tablet computer: similar to a laptop, but equipped with a touchscreen and/or handwriting recognition Netbook: similar to a laptop, but smaller, lighter, and more battery life

5 Hardware The tangible, physical equipment that can be seen and touched
Examples: Computer Case Monitor Keyboard and Mouse Disk Drive Speakers

6 PARTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM Computer Case (Processor inside)
Monitor Speaker Keyboard Computer Case (Processor inside) Mouse CD-ROM/DVD Drive Printer Floppy Disk Drive

7 What you don’t see… CPU (Central Processing Unit)
The “brains” of the computer housed on a tiny silicon chip inside the computer case. How Stuff Works Video

8 WHAT DOES THE COMPUTER DO? IPOS
Input Entering data into the computer (receiving) Processing Changing data into usable form (processing) Output Sending data out of the computer (leaving) Storage Saving data for later use (storing)

9 Input Devices Keyboard Mouse/Trackball Joystick Touchpad Touch Screen
Bar Code Reader Scanner Microphone Graphics Tablet Digital Cameras Digital Pen

10 Processing Device Only ONE! Central Processing Unit (CPU)

11 Output Devices Monitor: a screen that displays information Produces a softcopy Printer: gives you information from the computer in printed form Produces a hardcopy Speakers: allow you to hear voice, music, and other sounds

12 Internal Storage Devices
Hard Disk Drive: Magnetic platter that holds a large amount of information Allows the fastest access to information 80+ GBs RAM (Random Access Memory) – temporary ROM (Read Only Memory) – long-term memory

13 External Storage Devices
Floppy Disks Most are 3 ½ inches and hold 1.44 MB of data. CD-ROMs (Compact Disc Read Only Memory) CD-RW (Compact Disc Read and Write) 700 MGs DVDs (Digital Video Discs 17 GBs USB/Jump Drives 8+ GBs
