1 The Crusades

2 The First Crusade (1095-1099) Ordered by: Pope Urban 2
Victor: Won by the Christians Reason: Military expedition to aid the Byzantine Empire. Remember we discussed the Byzantine Empire in the Religion Unit?

3 Second Crusade (1147-1149) Ordered by: Pope Eugene Third.
Victor: Won by the Muslims. Reason: Response to the fall of the country of Edessa. Which was a crusader state created after the success of the first crusade.

4 Third Crusade (1189 - 1204) Ordered by: Pope Gregory 8th
Victor: Won by the Christians but they failed in their objective to conquer Jerusalem. Reason: Attempt to reconquer the Holylands from Saladin.

5 The Fourth Crusade (1202–04)  Ordered by: Pope Innocent the third Victor: A sequence of events culminated in the Crusaders sacking the city of Constantinople, the capital of the Christian-controlled Byzantine Empire. No clear winner or loser. Reason: Wanted to reconquer Muslim controlled Jerusalem.

6 Other Crusades There were other later crusades but we will only focus on these four for today. For example, there was a Children’s Crusade. All of these Children ended up being enslaved by the Muslims and never returned home.
