Franz Ferdinand’s funeral procession Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his family. Archduke was heir to the throne in the Austrian Hungarian Empire. His assassination June 28, 1914 eventually led to WWI. Garvillo Princip, a Serbian nationalist assassinated the Archduke. He was trying to gain allowances for his fellow Serbs who lived under Austrian rule. franz

Perhaps the most spectacular and complete German victory of the WWI. Germans surprised Russian 2nd Army. Virtually ended Russia's invasion of East Prussia before it had really started.

Battle of Marne: The First Battle of the Marne was fought on September 12th, halted German army. Started trench warfare associated with WWI.

32 STALEMATE AND WARFARE Stalemate Modern Warfare
By September 1914, the war had reached a stalemate, a situation in which neither side is able to gain an advantage. Not accustom to this new style of fighting, both sides holed up in trenches near Paris, “the western front.” Modern Warfare Neither soldiers nor officers were prepared for the new, highly efficient killing machines used in WW I. As morale fell, the lines between soldiers and civilians began to blur. The armies began to burn fields, kill livestock, and poison wells.

To avoid the stress of living in the trenches soldiers would be on a 3 week rotation.

39 Battle of Verdun & Somme Feb.-Dec.1916 (Western Front):
The German siege of Verdun and its ring of French forts, which comprised the bloodiest & longest battle of WWI. Verdun German advances 4 miles. Britain responded to Verdun with the battle of Somme British gains 5 miles. Both sides lost more than 500,000 soldiers.
