1 Respiratory System

2 The respiratory system is responsible for providing the oxygen needed by the body and for removing the carbon dioxide produced as your body uses energy for growth, repair and movement. The respiratory system consists of the lungs and organs that connect the lungs to fresh air such as: - The mouth - Nose - Pharynx (throat) - Trachea (windpipe) - Bronchi (singular: bronchiole)

3 Respiratory System: Gas Exchange
The main purpose of the respiratory system is gas exchange Inside alveoli sac O2 levels are high CO2 levels are low Inside the capillary O2 levels are low CO2 levels are high Oxygen enters the bloodstream in the lungs by diffusion. Carbon dioxide leaves the blood in the same way. The respiratory system is adapted in several ways to make these processes as efficient as possible.

4 Diffusion is the process responsible for gas exchange.
Recall: Diffusion is when particles move from high concentration  low concentration

5 How Breathing Works The respiratory system includes a method of moving air into and out of the lungs called breathing. 1. Patmosphere > P lungs 1. Plungs > Patmosphere 2. So air moves into lungs 2. So air moves out of lungs

6 Diseases of the Respiratory System
Tuberculosis Lung cancer SARS: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Caused by carcinogens from tobacco smoke in parts of the respiratory system, including lungs, mouth, esophagus, larynx, pancreas and bladder. infectious disease, easily passed between people Caused by bacteria entering your body when you breathe The bacteria grows in your lungs. If untreated, TB can be fatal. Caused by viruses Symptoms include: Flu-like symptoms including high fever, shortness of breath, dry cough, sore throat, headache, muscle pain, exhaustion Symptoms include: Fever, cough, weight loss, tiredness, chest pain Diagnosed with: X-rays Diagnosed with: X-rays
