4 CONJUNCTIONS A conjunction connects words or groups of words. There are three types of conjunctions: Coordinating Correlative Subordinating

5 Coordinating Conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions connect words or groups of words of equal importance in a sentence.

6 Coordinating Conjunctions
Sonia and her friends watched the football game. The action was slow at first, but the scene changed quickly.

8 Correlative Conjunctions
Correlative conjunctions are word pairs that serve to join words or groups of words.

11 Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions introduce subordinate clauses – clauses that can not stand alone – and join them to independent clauses. The class waited while the teacher checked her voice mail.

13 VERBALS A verbal is a verb form that acts as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. There are three types of verbals: Participles Gerunds Infinitives

14 Participles A participial is a verb form that acts as an adjective. It modifies a noun or pronoun.

15 Participles Loved by generations, Ronald McDonald has been the symbol of McDonalds since the 1940’s. Large crowds attend games featuring rival schools.

16 Participles There are two types of participles: Past – end in –ed Present – end in –ing

17 Gerunds A gerund is a verb form that ends in -ing and acts as a noun.
He loves swimming. Thank you for not smoking.

18 Gerunds A gerund phrase includes a gerund and its modifiers.
He loves swimming in the ocean. Daily smoking leads to lung cancer

19 Infinitives An infinitive is a verb form that typically begins with the word to , that can act as a noun, adjective, or adverb.

20 Infinitives To live well is to live free. More and more women are learning to play golf.
