When human like qualities are given to an animal or object.

A poem where the speaker is someone other then the poet themselves. A Dramatic poem often includes characters and dialogue. A Dramatic Monologue is often from a fictional character’s point of view.

12. Point of View Who is the Speaker of the Poem? What is their tone?
The Point of view can be the actual poet him/herself, but may also be an animal, an inanimate object, or a fictional character.

When something that wasn’t expected happens. Or when the opposite of what is expected happens.
For example:

The devil wasn’t coming for the gardener, he was coming for the farmer!

14. Connotation: Denotation: Word Choice/Diction
The way a word makes us feel.
Denotation:
The actual dictionary definition of the word.
Words can give us different feelings when we hear them…some positive, some negative, and everything in between!

A Cinquain is a poem that resembles a diamond.
It has 5 lines and begins with one word.
The 2nd line has two adjectives that describe that word.
The 3rd , three verbs.
The 4th line is a phrase that goes deeper into the topic.
The 5th line gives either a synonym for the first word, or a word that encompasses the whole poem.

20. Concrete Poetry
Poetry in which authors use both words and physical shape to convey a message.

22. Headline Poem: a poem that uses clippings from newspapers or magazines to create a message.

23. Type and Form
There are MANY different types or forms of poems. Some fit a specific format and some fit a specific theme.
Some examples of format poems:
Acrostic: a word or set of words is written down the page and each line starts with that letter.
Sonnet: 14 lines of iambic pentameter, with a specific rhyme scheme and intro/conclusion style.
Sestina: Each stanza must use the same end words as the first stanza, but in a different pattern each time.

24. Poems without a specific rhythm or beat are called Free Verse.
Invented in the 1800s by Walt Whitman
Usually Non-rhyming
Line breaks and line lengths are up to the poet.
It is the most popular form used by contemporary poets today.
