2 Types of Imperial Rule

3 1. Economic Companies India – British East India Company (1600-1858)
Indonesia – Dutch East India Company ( ) Kenya – British East Africa Company ( ) Malawi, Zambia & Zimbabwe – British South Africa Company ( ) This type of rule was used to establish imperial colonies for these countries, once established they was generally a transition to indirect rule, especially for British colonies.

4 2. Indirect Rule Indirect Control – (Protectorate)
Relied on existing leaders Gov’t institutions were based on European styles British, U.S used Indirect control

5 3. Direct Rule France, Belgium, Germany, Portugal
assimilation & association (France) Foreign leaders rule (Europeans) Viewed Africans as Children unable to rule themselves

6 4. Settler Rule South Africa – Holland & Britain
This type of rule was used to establish imperial colonies for these countries, once established the colony had a great deal of autonomy, but still answered to the Monarchy of their respective homelands. There was a consistent use of “indirect "colonial control towards the later years.
