2 A fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group—such as a nation or a besieged city—from within. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. Clandestine fifth column activities can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, or espionage executed within defense lines by secret sympathizers with an external force.

June 24, the Soviets cut off all access to West Berlin by road – they hoped it would force the western powers out of the city. western powers airlifted food, clothing, coal, medicine, and other supplies to the city. Nearly one year later, the Soviets ended their blockade.

27 NATO & Warsaw Pact The Soviets formed an opposing alliance
TEN nations form the original NATO, a defensive alliance that pledged assistance to each other if any member were attacked. This was the first military alliance the US had ever entered into during peacetime. The Soviets formed an opposing alliance with seven Eastern European nations under the Warsaw Pact.
