Joint-stock company - Group of investors who share a company’s profits and losses. Virginia Company - group that funded Jamestown voyage.

3 Types of Colonies Royal Proprietary
Colonies that belong to the King of England Colonies that belong to a powerful person or company. It started out as a proprietary and then turned to a royal colony in 1624. What type of colony was Jamestown?

9 Jamestown Story Colonists were attacked by Algonquians on/off again.
Formed a triangle around a storehouse, church, and a number of houses. Natives traded foods for copper and iron.

14 John Smith Smith takes over in 1608 and establishes a “no work, no food” policy. In 1609, he was hurt by gunpowder and left for England. It became known as the “starving time” Colonists buried weapons and abandoned the fort, until a resupply ship arrived.

16 Jamestown story Colonists and the Powhatan had some peace when Pocahontas married tobacco entrepreneur John Rolfe. Dutch slave traders traded Africans for food. Africans became indentured servants. 1622, natives attacked Jamestown and killed over 300 people. King revokes proprietary charter and issues a royal charter.

17 What saves the colony from collapse?
Tobacco Tobacco needed long, hot, humid growing seasons. Constant arrivals of new English settlers Virginia Company gave away 50 acres of free land if they paid for their own trip or paid for someone.

20 Bacon’s Rebellion “I thank God, there are no free schools nor printing [in Virginia], and I hope we shall not have these [for a] hundred years; for learning has brought disobedience and heresy...into the world, and printing has divulged [spread] them, and libels [untruths] against the best government. God keep us from both!” ~ William Berkeley, 1671

21 Bacon’s Rebellion Settlers move farther out --> cost more $$$ to transport goods Settlers threatened by Natives Governor of Virginia places taxes on planters --> gives tax money to his friends. Indians + settlers battled --> settlers wanted to kill ALL natives...but Governor doesn’t act.

22 Bacon’s Rebellion Settlers rebel and choose Nathaniel Bacon to lead them. Berkeley protests Bacon and settlers drive him out of town and burned down Jamestown. Bacon dies 2 years later from disease, Berkeley regains power, fired by the King. WHAT SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS WERE MADE WITH BACON’S REBELLION?
