The 13 Colonies

2 Constructing the foldable
1. Stack 2 sheets of paper together, using the “hot dog” orientation. 2. Fold the top half down to make a long rectangle. Staple the sheets together along the fold. Open the flipbook, creating a neat crease on each page inside at the staple line. 3. Divide the flipbook into 3 separate sections by making 2 cuts about 3 inches long. Be careful not to cut all the way through the fold at the top.

3 Regions Content: Use your colonies map, notes, study guides and chapter 3 in your text to help you complete this assignment. Use pencil first, check spelling and grammar, and then go over the pencil in ink. Neatly erase all pencil after the ink dries.

4 Cover Each section of the cover will have the name of a colonial region and a map showing the colonies in that region. a. Label the left section as New England Colonies, the middle section as the Middle Colonies, and the right section as the Southern Colonies. b. Glue the map of each region in the appropriate section. Label each colony and color them.

5 Top half of first inside page – Geography
a. Label the left section as New England Geography, the middle section as the Middle Colonies’ Geography, and the right section as the Southern Colonies’ Geography. b. Think about the land and water features of each region. Are there ports? Rivers? Mountains? Plains? What is the soil like – is it good for farming? c. Create a small landscape illustrating the geographic features in each section, in the appropriate area. Color your landscape and label its features.

6 Geography/climate New England – thin, rocky soil, rocky harbors – good for ships, cold, long winters; Subsistence farming Middle Colonies – good soil for farming, rolling hills, mild climate Southern – good soil for farming, long hot summers

7 Bottom half of first inside page – Cultural Groups
a. Label the left section as New England Cultures, the middle section as the Middle Colonies’ Cultures, and the right section as the Southern Colonial Cultures. b. List the cultural and ethnic groups that settled each region, in the appropriate section. Include religious and ethnic groups. c. Create small symbols or illustrations for the 2-3 major cultural groups in each section. Color your symbols.

8 Cultures New England – Puritans, Separatists
Middle – Pennsylvania Quakers– Dutch – pacifists (do not believe in war) Southern – Georgia – debtor’s colony; Maryland- Catholics, mostly English Anglicans (members of Church of England)

9 Top half of second inside page – Economic Activity
(products that brought money to the colony) a. Label the left section as New England Economy, the middle section as the Middle Colonies’ Economy, and the right section as the Southern Colonial Economy. b. List the products produced by each colony/region in the appropriate area. c. Illustrate and color your products.

10 Economic activity New England – shipbuilding, fishing, fur trading, timber Middle - farming – grains – wheat, barley, oats (Breadbasket Colonies) Southern – cash crops $$$ - tobacco, rice, indigo, later - cotton

11 Bottom half of second inside page – Colonial Government
a. Label the left section as New England Government, the middle section as the Middle Colonies’ Government, and the right section as the Southern Colonial Government. b. List the colonies in that region and tell whether they were charter, royal, or proprietary colonies. c. Think about the colonies in each region. Were there any important organizations or documents that governed the colonies in that region? Create symbols for them. Label and color your symbols.

12 Government New England – MA – Mayflower Compact; CT – Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1st written constitution in the New World!) Middle – governors, elected representatives Southern – VA – House of Burgesses- Williamsburg

13 Last inside page (top and bottom) – Founders’ Cemetery
a. Label each section as Founders’ Cemetery. b. Think about the colony founders and other important historical figures from each region. c. Create tombstones or monuments for your founders and other characters. On each, include the person’s name and a brief statement of his/her contribution to the colony. Go over your work in ink.
