National Assembly took over church lands
Church officials had to be elected
Sold the lands to help debt
Angered devout Catholics
No longer supported the reforms

4. Louis Tries to Escape Louis fears for his life Told to flee
Tries to go to Austria
Captured and returned to Paris

5. A Limited Monarchy Created by National Assembly Strips king of power
Creates Legislative Assembly (law making group)
Created laws and declared war

6. Factions Split France Still face problems of debt and food shortages

How to deal with them makes three different groups:
Radicals: no monarchy; lots of change
Moderates: want a few changes
Conservatives: limited monarchy
