Civilization Emerges in China
When does civilization begin in Huang He valley? Fossil remains date to 1.7 million years ago Peking man Chinese settlements develop BEFORE cities in Mesopotamia (but do not develop into actual civilization until later)
5
About the Shang Dynasty
Rules from ~1700 BCE to BCE First family in China to leave written records behind Important city: Anyang Surrounded city w/ walls for protection
6
GRAPES Notes: Huang He River Valley
7
GEOGRAPHY: Rivers: Huang He, Yangtze
Huang He = “Yellow” Leaves behind yellow silt (loess) after floods Floods = terrible Trade = difficult (geographic isolation) Not great natural protection Farming problem = only 10% of the land is arable (farmable)
8
RELIGION: Spirits of family ancestors = can bring good/bad things to family Oracle bones Polytheistic Supreme god: Shang Di Other lesser gods
9
ACHIEVEMENTS: Writing system (still pictographic)
Characters that stand for a syllable No links between written and spoken language Difficulty communicating in different regions of China Irrigation using levees Use of bronze/iron in tools, weapons Silk production (eventually trade) Eventually constructed roads/canals under Zhou dynasty Feudalism
11
POLITICS/GOVERNMENT:
Ruled by an emperor, who was in charge of a dynasty Dynasties = like hereditary monarchies Mandate of Heaven Belief that if a ruler was just, the gods would bless him and allow him to keep ruling but will allow him to be overthrown if he is unjust If an emperor was unjust or bad, the gods would withdraw their blessing, leading to the ruler’s overthrow = a new ruler and dynasty comes to power
12
Major dynasties in China:
Shang Dynasty ( BCE) Zhou Dynasty (~ BCE) When they took over control from Shang dynasty, they used the Mandate of Heaven to justify their overthrow
14
ECONOMICS: Agriculture-based economy
Not a lot of farmable land = need to trade, too Built roads to try to stimulate trade (didn’t work that well b/c of geo. Isolation) Eventually coin money towards end of Zhou dynasty
15
SOCIAL/SOCIETY: Two key things: 1. Loyalty (to family and elders)
Respect one’s parents = impt. Patriarchal society 2. Family Family is most important group in society
16
