2. The Election of 1860
The election was held on Tuesday, November 6, 1860 
Lincoln won with less than 40 percent of the popular vote nationwide. Unlike past Presidents, he carried not one slave-holding state.

In the eleven states that would later declare their secession from the Union and be controlled by Confederate armies, ballots for Lincoln were cast only in Virginia, where he received only 1.1 percent of the popular vote.
Virginia did NOT immediately secede from the United States!

5. Fort Sumter, South Carolina
The First Battle of Fort Sumter opened on April 12th, The Fort surrendered the next day.
Lincoln called for volunteers to defeat the rebellion shortly after.

6. Virginia Secedes
On April 17, 1861 the Virginia convention voted to declare secession from the Union, pending ratification of the decision by the voters.
With the entry of Virginia into the Confederacy, a decision was made in May to move the Confederate capital from Alabama to Richmond, VA.

7. The Civil War Begins…
Virginia is a front line state and would see most of the battles in the East.
Union troops would immediately take Alexandria and Arlington, which was Robert E. Lee’s house before the war.
