Trading Around the World Yankee merchants are trading in all parts of the world Barbary States: North Africa—America must pay a bribe or tribute to trade War w/ Tripoli (one of the Barbary States)– Am. wins; 1805 treaty states Tripoli will not interfere w/ Am ships

2 B. Attacks on American Ships
1803 – Britain & France are at war again Both countries begin to ignore American neutrality and start to capture American trading ships The British also began to kidnap American sailors and force them to serve on British ships; this is impressment and infuriates America

3 C. Ban on Trade Embargo Act –1807 –Congress passed an act that forbade the US to import or export goods This hurt the US more than Britain or Fr.ance. Exports in US drop from $108 mill. in 1807 to $22 mill in 1808. Sailors out of work; farmers lost $; Am merchants complain Nonintercourse Act limited ban; US can trade w/ all nations but Fr. & Br.
