1 Simple breast cysts are completely benign and are thought to occur due to duct obstruction. They are the most commonly encountered breast masses and can be difficult to be distinguished from solid masses based on mammographic findings. They can fluctuate in size with menstrual cycle and seem to grow under estrogenic stimulation, maximizing in the premenstrual phase. No treatment is usually required unless they are painful.
