2 U.S. Influence in Asia 1) China and the “Open Door Policy”
- U.S. called for open access to Chinese ports and the elimination of special privileges for any of the trading nations. 2) The Boxer Rebellion (Uprising of the Righteous and Harmonious fists) - Chinese that opposed the influence of western nations started a rebellion. (Rebellion of the Righteous and Harmonious fists) - The rebellion is put down by troops from Britain, France, Germany and Japan joined by 2500 Americans.

3 U.S. Influence in Asia 3) Russo-Japanese War
- War between Japan and Russia (Russia defeated) - President Roosevelt asked to mediate conflict - Roosevelt able to reach peace between the two nations. (Won the noble peace prize for this)

4 The Panama Canal A) Reason
- Cut down travel from Atlantic to Pacific Ocean - Before: 13,000 miles - After: 5,200 miles B) Construction - Began in 1904 over 43,000 workers employed - More than 5,600 workers died during its construction and it cost the US $380 million.

6 U.S. Foreign Policies 1) Teddy Roosevelt
- Philosophy: “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” a) Warned European powers that they should not interfere in the Western Hemisphere. b) Any disorder in Latin America might force the US to exercise its international police power to protect US economic interest.

7 U.S. Foreign Policy 2) President William Taft
1) Replaced Roosevelt’s big stick approach with the idea of using business investments. (DOLLAR DIPLOMACY) 2) Under Taft investment in Central America rose from $41 million in to $93 in 1914. 3) Reality: Taft would eventually have to use military force to prop up governments in Honduras and Nicaragua that were friendly to US business interest.

8 U.S. Foreign Policy 3) Woodrow Wilson “Missionary Diplomacy”
1. Wilson believed that the U.S. had a moral obligation to deny recognition to any Latin American government that was oppressive, undemocratic or hostile to U.S. interest.
