SAT Exam Most colleges will accept score from the December test date (SDSU, Cal Poly, CSULB want November test date) Check colleges for specific admission deadlines! Maximum score of 1600 (reading/writing & math) No penalty for wrong answers Essay is optional (but required for UC’s and most private) Exam fee is $45 ($57 with essay) Next test dates: October 1, November 5, December 3 Register for test at Use your SAT scores to get free practice recommendations by linking your College Board and Khan Academy® accounts. Fee waivers available!

ACT Exam Divided into parts Scoring is 1-36 points per section
English, Math, Social Science, Science, Writing (essay) Scoring is 1-36 points per section Maximum composite score of 36 No penalty for incorrect answers Exam fee is $39.50 ($59.50 with essay) Next test dates: October 1, November 5, December 3 Register at Fee waivers available!

Fee Waivers Fee waivers can be given if you are approved for Free/Reduced lunch (need to apply every year!) Once approved in system, students can receive: 2 FREE SAT exams 2 FREE SAT Subject test 2 FREE ACT exams Reduced fees on AP exams NCAA Fee waiver College application fee waivers

Community Colleges Two-Year Schools
No subject requirements; Must be 18 years old or a High School Graduate Options include Certificate programs, Associates Degree, or Transfer to 4-Year Colleges No tests required (No SAT or ACT however if you are on the transfer program you will need to take a test) Some Community College Applications open October 1st! Check website for exact dates.

CSU/UC A-G Requirements (minimum)
A. 2 years World History, US History, or Government B. 4 years college prep English C. 3 years math - Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 D. 2 years lab science E. 2 years same foreign language F. 1 year same visual/performing art (ex: Painting AB) G. 1 year advanced courses in math, English, lab science, foreign language or social sciences

4 year Universities with degree programs (Bachelors and Graduate Level) A full pattern of Subject Requirements (A-G) Minimum GPA of 2.0 (3.0 recommended); SAT I (Critical Reading and Math); ACT Check Eligibility Index for GPA vs. SAT/ACT score at For GPA’s between , students must determine minimum eligibility (Eligibility Index). Applications are available online beginning October 1st Cannot submit until November 1st and must be submitted by November 30th Self input classes based on transcript Tuition Fees: about $5,500 per academic year (not including books, housing, transportation) Cal States have different deadline dates for certain submissions…check their websites and student portals Application fee waivers are done on the application websites for Cal States. (can only submit request once!)

CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP)
CAASP (Smarter Balance) taken in 11th grade to determine college readiness in English and Math. Other ways to satisfy EAP: SAT/ACT/AP scores Check your eligibility at and learn what path you need to take “Ready” – for English and Math college level courses “Conditionally Ready” – Dependent on class/grade in English/Math class Senior year “Not Ready” – Must take CSU EPT and/or ELM placement exam Do not miss deadlines for a placement exam as you may be denied admission!

Private/Out of State Colleges
Programs vary according to size Prefer students who have met the UC/CSU A-G requirements with at least a 2.0** SAT/ ACT: Check catalogs for specific test requirements. **Applications for Private schools available at OR Check school/applications deadlines on the websites Check online for out of state application deadlines and requirements Most schools will require a letter of recommendation from counselor and/or teacher

Apply at starting October 1, 2016 You do not need to wait to file your taxes to apply Parents will use 2015 taxes for application California Dream Act –Students without lawful immigration status, who qualify for an AB540 nonresident tuition exemption. $5,500 for Cal States $12,00 for UC $9,000 for Private Schools Cal Grant B plus extreme financial need Cal Grant C Short term vocational grant Cal Grant GPA’s are sent electronically from the district (don’t need to send in paper form) Can be used for Community College, CSU, & UC Cal Grant GPA is calculated from 10th & 11th grade and is unweighted (no extra points), excludes PE Failure to use the same information on all applications can delay or deny your money!

Additional Financial Aid Options
CSS Profile-Opens in October Register at (search for CSS Profile) Online application that collects information used by certain colleges and scholarship programs to award institutional aid funds. Check your colleges’/programs’ information to determine whether they require the PROFILE. Western Undergraduate Exchange “WUE”
Through WUE, students in western states may enroll in more than 150 two-year and four-year college institutions at a reduced tuition level: 150% of the enrolling institution’s resident tuition. Apply directly to the WUE institution of your choice See complete list of schools at (included in your packet)

Scholarships Many scholarships come in to the college office every year Lists will be generated as new scholarships arrive and will be available in the college office and on the CHS website Chatsworth Community Scholarship: Available when we return in January Due in March (exact date TBA on application) Qualifies you for numerous community scholarships that are awarded at Senior Awards Night Join PTSA and Booster Club! NCAA National Collegiate Athletic Association
Students wanting to play athletics as a freshman at a 4-year college/university need to meet certain requirements Graduate from HS 16 core courses for Division 1 & 2 Minimum GPA required on NCAA courses and SAT All courses need to be on HS transcript Register to become a college-bound student athlete and learn about eligibility

Tips for Applications MEET THE DEADLINES!! Start early!
Deadline for Cal State/UC applications is November 30th! You don’t submit, you don’t get in Check private schools and out of state colleges for deadlines Set up separate account only for college applications Do not share your login/passwords with friends (boy/girl friends) On your personal statements, use “I” statements and write about yourself, not a lot about someone else. Use the same information on all applications/exams (college apps, FAFSA, SAT, ACT) Name, birthdate, address, social security # MEET THE DEADLINES!!

A couple more things! Do not drop courses senior year. Colleges want to see that student is still taking rigorous courses, however there are exceptions. Application workshops coming up 38 computers available in lab Bring transcripts! If I don’t know the answer, I will do my best to find it out and let students know. 2 computers available in the college office anytime students need Brochure, pamphlets, literature available in my office!

Understanding Your Transcript
Math and/or Foreign Language taken in middle school does not count high school credit…but it does count for college requirements. Any grade of “D” needs to be retaken for college requirements (but you do not receive credit again) Any course in which you received an “F” can be retaken for credit You have multiple GPA’s on your transcript LAUSD (weighted and unweighted), UC, CSU, Financial Aid, NCAA How many credits you have earned

Middle Class Scholarship-CSU/UC
You may receive a partial scholarship to help pay your CSU/UC tuition if you… Are a California resident who applies for financial aid ON TIME (FAFSA, DREAM APP) Are not already receiving grants and scholarships that equal your systemwide tuition and fees Have a total family income between $80K-$150K

Blue & Gold at UC You can receive enough grant and scholarship money from all sources to equal your systemwide tuition and fees IF YOU… Are a California Resident/AB 540 who applies for financial aid ON TIME Have a total family income of less than $80K and demonstrate financial need (FAFSA/DREAM APP) Are enrolled in one of your first 4 years (2 years for transfers) Can qualify for additional grant support beyond the BLUE & GOLD plan

Cal Grant Cont… Cal Grant GPA is calculated from 10th & 11th grade and is unweighted (no extra points), excludes PE To receive your Cal Grant, you must fill out your FAFSA or Dream ACT application. Cal Grant will match your name & GPA with your FAFSA Make sure you use the same name and spelling that is in the School system on all applications! Ex: If your name is Smith-Lopez in the school system, use the same name on your FAFSA, don’t leave out the hyphen or they will think you are two different people Failure to use the same information on all applications can delay or deny your money!
