1 First Trimester and Cocaine as a Teratogen

2 1st to 4th Week -fertilization and implantation occurs -embryotic development occurs (nervous system, heart, and circulatory system)

3 5th Week -first heart beats begin -umbilical cord, lungs, and brain start to develop -basic facial features, arm buds and leg buds, start to develop

4 6th ,7th Week -arms, legs, nostrils, lenses of the eye, intestines and pancreas start to appear or grow -elbows, fingers, feet, ears, and nose start to appear -intestines start to form in the umbilical cord

5 8th Week -cartilage and bones begin to form -eye is well under way of development -tongue begins form -intestines move toward abdomen -in males testosterone starts to be produced -about the size of a chicken egg

6 9th Week -baby begins movement -most joints are formed
-finger prints are evident -the baby is now a fetus

7 10th Week -baby’s head is half its length -placenta begins to function -eyelids fuse shut

8 11th Week -nearly all structures are formed
-finger and toes are now separated -genitals now take on the proper gender characteristics -more amniotic fluid -intestinal-muscle contractions

9 12th Week -vocal cords begin to form -facial features move into place -insulin in produces -intestines move further into body

10 Teratogen Cocaine

11 Effects -causes, miscarriage, premature birth, abrutio placenta. -increases heart rate of mother and baby -decreases oxygen to baby -bleeding of brain -spontaneous abortion 38% of the time

12 -increased uterine contractions causing premature births -less maternal blood gets to the baby -lack of nutrition -cocaine crosses the placenta to the baby
