1 Room 23 January 13, 2017 Language Arts Word Study Important Dates:
This week we continued with our theme, Weather Wonders and have been talking about how weather affects our lives. We re-read the story, The Bell in the Well, focusing on the plot of the story and determining the problem and solution. We practiced that skill with our just right books as well. Students also learned what dialogue was and how it makes a story more interesting. In our just right books we looked for dialogue and thought about how the story would be different or less interesting without dialogue. We learned three new vocabulary words: year, aware, thermometer **Please check my notes on your child’s reading circle ticket and organizers. Encourage your child to write more detail in writing. Word Study This week we learned all about double consonants: -ll, -ff, -ss, -zz. We learned the floss rule which means that when the /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/ sound is heard at the end of a one syllable word following a short vowel, that consonant is doubled. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with double consonants. We added new words to our word wall. Please practice these at home. They are: off, miss, all, will Important Dates: January 16th: No School January 26th: Hanging of the rainforest layers in the hallway (volunteers 9am) January 27th: Scholastic book orders due February 1st: Rainforest Animal research paper due (& tracer if choosing to make own) February 3rd: Rainforest Day! 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Alternates for the week:
Friday, we talked about why we have off school on Monday and the reason that we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s accomplishments. The students wrote about their own personal dreams, learned more about him from Kid President, and wrote/drew pictures on how they could be a friend to everyone. Science We have been continuing with our Rainforest Unit this week. We are getting very excited for Rainforest Day in February! We learned all about transpiration and rainforest frogs this week, specifically poisonous dart frogs and strawberry poison dart frogs. We looked a real pictures of rainforest animals, drew our own rainforest frogs, and saw videos of how frogs move around in the rainforest. **On Tuesday we will be painting the layers of the rainforest in science. Please send your child to school in clothing appropriate for painting. Math We continued chapter 8: Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20. In this chapter, students add and subtract within 20 using different strategies, such as grouping into tens and ones, number bonds, and using doubles facts to add and subtract. Please continue practice doubles facts with your child at home and making 10. Mastering these skills will help your with your child’s fact fluency. For example, in the problem 9+8, students should recognize that 8+8 is a doubles fact and =16 so that means that 8+9 must =17 because 9 is 1 more than 8. Another example, 9+8=10+7 which =17 so 9+8 must =17. It is easier to recognize the answers to problems that have 10 in them. Lunch Menu Next Week Monday: No School Tuesday: Meatball Sandwich Wednesday: Grilled Cheese Thursday: French Toast w/ sausage patty Friday: French Bread Pizza Alternates for the week: B) Cheeseburger C) PBJ D) Hummus Bites E) Chicken Salad Platter
