EARTH SCIENCE: AN INTRODUCTION
Oceanography Geology Astronomy Meteorology Earth Science is a complex course, designed to cover 4 broad subject areas: Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography And Astronomy. Geology: the study of Earth’s origin, history and structure. Meteorology: the study of the atmosphere, weather and climate. Oceanography: the study of Earth’s oceans including physical features, life forms and resources and finally Astronomy: the study of the position, composition, size, and other characteristics of the planets, stars and other objects in space. There is an abundant about of vocabulary that may be new to most of you. We will spend some time this week on prefixes and suffixes to help you better understand some terminology you will be held responsible for during the course.

A VIEW OF EARTH Four major spheres 1. Hydrosphere
Ocean:___________________________________ _________________________________________ b. Also includes fresh water on Earth 2. Atmosphere We will cover sphere No. 1: the hydrosphere when we discuss the water cycle and river/stream erosion. Oceanography may be touched upon – but it will be from the aspect of pollution of our oceans. The atmosphere will be discussed during our Meteorology Unit later in the semester. Thin blanket of air – serves to ______________

A VIEW OF EARTH, Cont. 3. Solid Earth Consists of:
1. Core: (_________________) 2. Mantle (________________) 3. Crust (________________) The majority of our time will be spent discussion the Solid Earth – Geology. The entire third quarter will concentrate on the components within this sphere. The biosphere will be threaded throughout all of the course work in Earth Science. Humans have a huge impact on the Earth and it’s systems. 4. Biosphere Includes ALL __________ Influences all other three spheres

MEASUREMENT IN SCIENCE
A. Length: __________________________________ Mass: Before moving into our core material, we are going to review a bit about the way scientists collect data to support their thoughts on the Earth and it’s processes. Each component of measurement will be reviewed. It is important that you remember WHAT UNIT is applied to what component.

Resources & Environment
Surrounds & influences organisms Env. problems: Human induced…for ex: 1. 2. 3. Throughout our time together, we will discuss the resources that Earth provides and that support life on this planet. Consequences of things such as the Industrial Revolution have led to problems and issues that we now have to deal with if we are going to use these resources wisely and conservatively. Natural hazards…for ex:
