Windows Server 2016 Standard & Datacenter Editions deliver enhancements to core Windows Server functionality.
The Windows Server 2016 feature set is not the same in both editions unlike Windows Server 2012 in which the only difference between Standard & Datacenter is virtualization. But no pre-existing features were moved from one edition to another.
Both primary editions with get rights to container technologies for developers to leverage regardless of the edition they are running
Standard Edition will continue to support scenarios with low density VMs.
Datacenter Edition will continue to support unlimited virtualization rights both for containers and VMs.
Datacenter Edition will also provide Storage features including Storage Replica & Storage Spaces Direct
Hyper-V is still included in both editions.
To license a physical server, all physical cores must be licensed
A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor in the Server
Core licenses will be sold in packs of 2
The Standard Edition of Windows Server will license up to 1 VM when all of the physical cores on the Server are licensed (minimum of 8 core per proc)
The price of 8 core licenses of Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and Standard Edition will be same price as 1 proc license of the corresponding editions of the Windows Server R2 version. No implicit price change in this scenario.
