The Era of Good Feeling was not all good Industry did not bring all positive change Immigrants were flooding in People are migrating in huge numbers to the West America, while growing and prospering, also faced poverty, alcoholism, illiteracy, and many other social issues… 1) reform was needed 2) What is reform? Making a change in order to improve something.

6 The War Against Alcohol
1) Early 1800s - Americans consumed more alcohol during this time than any other in history Alcoholism became common 2) As a result, the temperance movement began, the movement to limit alcohol consumption in the United States 3) Temperance supporters believed alcohol consumption led to criminal behavior, family violence, and poverty. 4) People were encouraged to practice abstinence, to stop drinking. Most temperance supporters were women 5) Some states adopted prohibition, which was a complete alcohol ban

7 Reforming Education 1) Reformers were worried that schools were inadequate and there was a substantial lack of literacy in the U.S. 2) They argued the nation needed government funded, free public schools for all American children. 3) Horace Mann is considered the father of public education From Massachusetts Worked tirelessly to increase government spending for free education

8 Abolition 1) In the early 1800s, many people began to believe in the abolishment of slavery. This began the abolitionist movement 2) By the early 1800s, most Northern states had gotten rid of slavery However the Southern states fiercely defended it, as it was vital to their economy 3) William Lloyd Garrison Frederick Douglass Two notable abolitionists, which we will talk more about later…

9 Women’s Rights In the 1800s, women were very limited in what they could do with their lives. 1) cult of domesticity – basically states that the woman’s place is the home 2) Elizabeth Cady Stanton – one of the most influential women in American history 3) Wanted to end slavery and give more rights to women – led to the Women’s Rights Movement 4) 1848 – Stanton and Lucretia Mott and followers make the movement official at the Seneca Falls Conference

10 Women’s Rights 5) They sign a Declaration of Sentiments to express their discontent as American women Women wanted the right to own land Have their own finances Have a fair chance at having custody of their children in the event of a divorce 6) Of all these rights, according to Stanton, the most important was the right to vote, also called suffrage 7) If women gain the right to vote, they will have the power to get all the other rights in due time.
