On the sheet provided by Ms. Wrede Step 1 – Write your group members names Step 2 – Identify and define the 3 powers of the Catholic Church Step 3 – Imagine that you are the Catholic Church and you want these three powers posted in every church in Europe. Write out a declaration of what these powers are. For example, if a power of Ms. Wrede is to determine grades, you would write “Ms. Wrede has the power to determine grades based on quality of work, timely turn in, and accuracy.” Step 4 – Identify two reasons why people should follow the law. Step 5 – Create two reasons why each law would be broken. Step 6 – Choose one of the powers. Choose one person to be the person who violates the power. Choose one person to be the pope. The person who violated the law has to plead his/her case to the pope why they violated it. The pope gets to determine what happens to him/her. The third person in the group records the discussion. Step 7 – Answer the question: is it right for the pope to be able to inflict punishment?
