2. Prepositional Phrases
A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word or element in the rest of the sentence.
Example: She swam across the lake.
The relationships include position, location, time, cause, manner, and amount.

A preposition goes with a pronoun or a noun (called the object of the preposition) to form a prepositional phrase.
The preposition is almost always before the noun or pronoun and that is why it is called a preposition.
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun/pronoun.

When prepositional phrases describe a noun or pronoun, they act as adjective. These phrases are called adjective phrases.
Adjective phrases come after the words they modify. These phrases answer questions like what kind and which one.

When prepositional phrases describe verbs, adjectives, or adverbs they are called adverb phrases. Adverb phrases tell how, when or where.
Example:
Dr. Fleming worked at the lab. (modifies a verb/worked)
He was eager for lunch. (modifies an adjective/eager)
He stayed late into the night. (modifies an adverb/late)
