Challenging A levels It’s a lot to ask of a teenager…
AS exams in May-June 2018 • 3/4 subjects/CAS A2 exams in May-June 2019 • 3 subjects “It’s not the carefree age that some adults might think” A. Neustatter ‘The Observer “Today’s sixth formers are under tremendous pressure to achieve” I. Colm ‘TES’
9
Comparison to GCSEs Motivation: Why am I studying for A levels?
Time management Independent learning Read / Transform notes Answer past questions Use Examiner reports/mark schemes Practise again and again
10
“Spoon feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon”
E.M. Forster
11
A successful student is…
Someone who… • Sets ambitious targets • Has a balanced life • Manages and plans their time • Seeks support and guidance • Thinks critically • Engages with the tutorial programme/ CAS programme • Is adaptable • Has high aspirations
12
Time Management In Year 12, expect to do 5 hours’ work per subject outside lessons each week. New Sixth Form Centre – with silent study room. Students are expected to remain onsite all day to establish good study habits. At home, every student needs a place to study undistracted. Work must be paced and not left until deadlines loom. Sixth Form assignments are rarely straightforward overnight tasks. Use of the planner and schoology is vital.
13
“But I’ve done all my homework”
Review the work done in a lesson and type up notes Research a topic further using textbooks/ journals/the Internet Study exam questions Practise languages/exercises Develop sketch books/coursework
14
Exam success will come to those who…
Attend all lessons Prepare beforehand for lessons Communicate with staff Become independent learners Work hard: 5 hours per subject Recognise that they cannot get by on the minimum
15
Progression to A2 Is not automatic AS Grade D
The minimum criterion for continuing on to the more challenging A2 Level study: AS Grade D AS Level pass grades = A-E, but E is not an adequate threshold for coping with A2.
16
Support • Attendance and punctuality • Involvement in school life
• Extra-curricular activities – CAS, DofE • Outstanding Ofsted • Subject teachers • Progress monitoring • Interim and main reports • Target setting through ALIS and ALPS To provide a formal process for measuring performance To identify potential areas of concern To provide a platform for discussion To encourage improvement

Part time work • Part time jobs provide students with valuable experience However Students must manage the hours they work each week and their studies must be their priority It is suggested that students work no more than 8 hours a week
23
Future Choices UCAS Certain subjects, such as primary education, medicine, physiotherapy, dentistry or veterinary science, require work experience. Applicants for these courses will not be invited for interview unless they have relevant work experience in year 12. This will form the basis of their personal statement. For other courses, university open days will start in the summer term We will be running a day off timetable, to enable all year 12 students to register with UCAS, consider the different courses and types of university and start a competitive application.
24
Future Choices Alternative routes
Support with apprenticeship applications Careers fair in June Further education, such as an art foundation or specific level 3 courses Help and support with job applications and seeking employment Lots of excellent schemes, such as school leavers programme, encourage your son or daughter to explore the different options
